The highly versatile inReach does not require any companion hardware. By itself, it can send pre-loaded text messages and SOS alerts (with delivery confirmation) and enable remote tracking, all via pushbutton. When you add an Android smartphone, you enable the inReach’s exclusive 2-way satellite messaging.

Two-Way Messaging

Pair the inReach with your Android phone via Bluetooth, and you can send and receive messages up to 160 characters to and from email contacts, cell phones, and emergency dispatchers. You can also post to Facebook and Twitter.

Message Delivery Confirmation

You’ll never have to wonder if your message was received. The inReach will confirm delivery of any text or SOS messages. It makes no difference whether the messages were sent by a standalone inReach or an inReach paired with an Android phone.

I bought this device with high hopes. It promises to allow a person to send and receive short text messages when paired with an Android phone.However, with my first device, the bluetooth pairing function on the inReach didn't work.After several hours of working on the device, reading manuals, internet forums, and technical support articles, it simply wouldn't pair and connect. After some time on the phone with tech support, the Delorme folks decided that my device may be defective and they sent me a new device. What was particularly noteworthy is that they sent the replacement device out right then. They didn't wait for me to send them my defective device first. I was very pleased with this customer service. I received the new device, and it works like it should. It pairs and connects with my Android phone just as it is supposed to. I am able to send text messages even when not in cell phone range. This is great because now if I'm running late on a trip, I can let my wife know that I am ok (or not ok as the case may be.) It's nice to be able to have the flexibility of sending detailed text messages rather than just being able to send pre-written canned messages. The only reason I didn't give the device 5 stars is that I want to use the device for a while and make sure that it continues to work well. If it does, I will be back and revise my rating.
