OK, it is not perfect. I don't know of a laptop that doesn't have some kind of negative, they all do. This machine is powerful. It has an Intel processor with integrated video plus a descrete ATI/AMD card. And that is the problem. There are many of these hybrids coming out and they have not perfected the BIOS. You can't choose to use only one of the GPU's in the BIOS which is very bad. The software interface to change between video options basically stinks. It is a very good laptop but is hobbled by the BIOS and software when it comes to the video options. The Intel HD 3000 integrated GPU is good, the AMD 6550M descrete GPU is very good but in the end they are both limited by the weak BIOS and software. It is a very good laptop except for this dual graphics issue.Update: You can choose to make the integrated GPU (Intel) the only video card in the BIOS but not the faster and better AMD one. Really makes no sense. The best solution would if Acer made one of the function keys toggle between graphics modes. I can only hope they read this. May try to contact them but I know how frustrating that can be.Update #2: After playing around with it quite a bit more it does seem the software automatically kicks in the high power graphics when needed......sometimes. Still kind of hit and miss. The software will pop up an option to select the discrete video card but sometimes you select it and it won't take, it goes back to no selection. Very frustrating to say the least. I do not like software having control over which GPU I want to use.Update #3: Today (11/30/11) I discover OpenGL does not work. After having all these problems I decided to do research online and have discovered all these problems have been identified for at least 2-3 months across many manufacturers notebooks with switchable graphics. I have spent a significant amount of time both on the phone and through email trying to get Acer to at least admit there is a problem. No such luck. Some other manufacturers have at least attempted to fix the problems. It is sad these types of notebooks are continuing to be sold to the unaware public with these known problems. Definitely not recommended if wanting to play games that use OpenGL.There are workarounds I have found to make some older games work with OpenGL. It seems the drivers for these GPUs don't like the older OpenGL games. I guess the bottom line be aware you will probably have issues with this machine if you play older games and will need to do research to make things work properly.Update #4: (12/03/11) The switching software is working much better. I uninstalled the video drivers for both GPUs and removed all driver files from the computer then rebooted. Then installed the latest drivers from Acer website (8.22.0.0) using the Express option in the install manager. The software now holds the preference as to which GPU I want to use for a particular program and seems to really work. Much happier after a week using and learning the system.You also can't rush the selection in software. It is taking mine 3-5 seconds to apply the preference but once it takes, it sticks.It is a powerful notebook for the price but will take some effort to get it going if you are a gamer. If you don't play games you may even give it 5 stars. It is a good value for the price.THIS IS AWESOME HARDWARE FOR THE PRICE, THEY NEED TO FIX THE BIOS AND DRIVERS. BEING LOCKED TO ACER VIDEO DRIVERS IS NOT GOOD. EVERY OTHER ACER I'VE OWNED I HAVE BEEN ABLE TO USE THE CURRENT AMD/ATI GENERIC VIDEO DRIVERS.
